Running up Snowdon

It was a day of many firsts. My first time in Wales, the first time spectating a triathlon, the first time crewing, and the first real trail run. I was quite nervous beforehand — I was worried that I would struggle with the run, especially with it being uphill. I also wasn't sure how I was going to get Lee through the last part of a rough race.

We arrived the day before, and met up at a campsite nearby. We ended the day with pizza at this amazing little place packed with locals, ran by the same owner as the campsite. After attending the briefing at the starting point, we headed to bed early only to wake up at 5am for what would be a long day.

The race started with a swim in a gorgeous lake at the foot of the mountain. Both Lee and Michael were well on track and headed off on their bikes soon enough.

We waited for them to pass by after their first loop, which took longer than expected. Turns out, they both had tire problems. Michael even needed to have his tire replaced and was brought back by the mechanic to the point where he dropped off. One little hiccup, and he was suddenly behind.

When it was time for me to run up the mountain, I was all pumped up. Lee was, understandably, exhausted. We ended up walking the entire way, which was already a challenge in itself. A few flapjacks and an ice lolly later, we made it to the top. And the views were worth it! Halfway up we got a text from Daniel — Michael switched to doing the half distance after he got too far behind. They were about to go up the mountain, too.

On our way down, Lee and I were flying. Some parts were challenging: steep and with lots of loose little stones. But that didn't stop us from running the entire way. We paused to buy Lee a sports drink at the halfway point. When they didn't accept my card for under £5, I bought three bottles. Coincidentally, guess who just arrived at the same point on their way up! After providing everyone with a drink, we each carried on in opposite directions.

As worried as I was that I wouldn't be able to keep up, I never expected to have so much fun. In fact, I hadn't felt this alive in a long time! Running down the mountain and enjoying the views is when I realised I'll be doing more trail runs.
